#MentorMonday: Stephanie Gray
Stephanie joined the Magdalene Coming Home team last summer. She is our marketing and social media guru. She lives in Conway with her partner and her two cats, Robert Redford and Elizabeth Taylor.
Everyone has a story. It’s not always a happy story, and for some it takes a while to share their story. I have one of those stories, along with so many of the women of Magdalene.
I am survivor of sexual assault.
Even now, it is difficult to say that. There was a time in my life where I couldn’t. There have been several instances in my life of assault, but the worst was when I was raped in college. It was living a nightmare. I couldn’t sleep because when I closed my eyes, my rapist was there. I was afraid. I was broken. I was guilty. The self-blame was eating me alive. I lost all control of everything I ever knew.
As time went on, I started to sleep better and go on with my life. I tried to find new projects to fill my time or take more classes. I was better, but I never took the time to heal.
I didn’t have the opportunity to stay at a place like Magdalene Coming Home. I wish I did. I wish that I could experience the loving sisterhood and circle that is Magdalene. How amazing it is to have a place to call home where just have a place to heals.
This is what Magdalene does: provides that safe space to heal. Everyone deserves that.
My rape isn’t my story anymore. My story represents the hundreds of thousands of women that are assaulted and abused. It is a horrible story. But I want to help women create a new story, and that is a story of hope and healing.
Peace and blessings,
